Atsumasa Sakai

Mr. Atsumasa Sakai is Senior Energy Specialist of East Asia Department, Asian Development Bank (ADB). He implements $260 million smart low-carbon district heating project in Qingdao, People’s Republic of China. The project aims to improve the air quality in Qingdao by promoting low-carbon heating supply infrastructure. In Mongolia, Mr. Sakai has processed one of the world largest battery energy storage system project recently. The project expects to unlock the country’s renewable energy potential, improving the air quality in urban areas.
Mr. Sakai has completed master’s degree of Technology and Policy Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US. He started his career at one of the world-largest private utilities in Japan, where he earned rich experience of O&M of power facilities at field and of power system planning over the Asian countries. He was seconded to International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria, to conduct economic analysis on hydrogen-based distributed energy resource system for future Japan.
