Woochong Um

Managing Director General - Office of the President,
Asian Development Bank (ADB)

Mr. Woochong Um has been the Managing Director General at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) since February 2021, marking a 30-year career with the organization, where he held various positions promoting sustainable development. Prior to the ADB, he worked as a corporate computer systems specialist at the Pitney Bowes and the Pfizer in the USA. Mr. Um institutes ADB-wide coherence on key initiatives and strategic issues. His leadership covers managing the: Department of Communications and Knowledge Management, Office of Safeguards, and the Transformation Office. He also oversees new business incubation initiatives. He provides oversight of the: Economic Research and Development Impact, Accountability Mechanism-Problem Solving, Office of Professional Ethics and Conduct, and the Ombuds Office. Mr. Um spear-heads strategic initiatives assigned by the President, in close collaboration with 6 Vice President(s), including: Implementation of Strategy 2030 and its midterm review; organizational transformation (organizational restructuring and culture transformation initiative); innovation framework; talent management; organizational resilience and business continuity; and any other ADB-wide initiatives. He also oversees the implementation of the Knowledge Management Action Plan. Mr. Um is in charge of driving ADB’s overall climate change as well as the private sector shift agenda. Mr. Um is core part of the Management Committee along with the President and 6 VPs. He spear-heads ad hoc committees, such as Climate Change and Private Sector Shift Committees, to strategize and execute corporate initiatives. He functions as the concurrent Officer-in-Charge of various VPs as needed: Vice President (Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development) from March 2022 until 31 August 2023; Vice President (East, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Operations) from 11 August 2023 until 01 November 2023; Vice-President (Market Solutions) from September 2023 until 30 November 2023; and Vice President (Central and South Asia Operations) from 13 December 2023 until 15 January 2024. Mr. Um holds an MBA in Finance from New York University, USA, and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Boston College, USA.
