Background

In conjunction with the Spotlight Session at 10:00 to 12:30 June 16th this session will explore how upstream sensitivity mapping can provide low cost solution to speeding up the delivery of the transition to renewable energy by enabling sites of high wind/solar resource but with low environmental sensitivity to be quickly identified which are ideal for development as well as sites of high sensitivity that should be avoided.

Objectives

This Side Event will have the following primary objectives:

  • The session will give an overview of the issues around scaling up renewable energy and the opportunities and challenges this presents.
  • The session will demonstrate the newly launched eSensitivity mapping tool AVISTEP (Avian Sensitivity Tool for Energy Planning). This will include:
    • Showing the current coverage of the tool and what geospatial layers are available;
    • Working through an example of a theoretical project for wind, solar and transmission;
    • Showing the output of the analysis completed;
    • Demonstrating the linkage to other datasets that will be available
  • Take questions and feedback on the tool
