Jack Chong-Gum

CEO,
Marshalls Energy Company

As CEO of Marshalls Energy Company since 2016, Jack Chong-Gum is transforming the utility into a resilient, sustainable, and affordable operation. He joined MEC when aging infrastructure relied heavily on imported diesel and climate change threatened the Marshall Islands' low-lying atolls.Jack has been at the forefront of implementing critical projects like the Energy Transition Project, REGAIN, and SEDeP after the RMI Government secured international funding to modernize power generation and distribution. Under his leadership, MEC developed the Marshall Islands' first Integrated Resource and Resilience Plan, creating a pathway from 2% renewable energy in 2017 to 24% by 2030 through 12 MW of solar power and 17 MWh of energy storage.Balancing financial sustainability with affordable electricity has been challenging. The new tariff methodology Jack implemented automatically adjusts for fuel costs while regularly reviewing fixed expenses, moving MEC toward self-sufficiency while protecting consumers from price shocks. As a Marshall Islander, building climate resilience is personal to Jack. He has prioritized climate-adapted distribution networks by elevating equipment, undergrounding vulnerable lines, and strengthening emergency response to maintain reliable power despite environmental threats. He remains focused on MEC's transition to a utility providing reliable, affordable electricity while protecting the environment. Converting from imported diesel to local renewable energy isn't just about efficiency—it's about preserving the Marshall Islands for generations to come.
