Background
The availability of critical minerals will be essential to the transition to a low-carbon energy system, as well as boosting economic growth along the renewable energy supply chain. Asia is set to play a key role in both the demand and supply of critical minerals, and discussions are taking place in the region under India’s G20 presidency and other high level fora. Together with our partners, WRI is convening policymakers, industry and leading researchers to inform a strategy for the future of critical minerals as demand multiplies by 2 to 4 times current levels by 2040. Join us for a high-level discussion of the challenges and opportunities of securing future critical minerals in Asia. During this moderated discussion, panelists will discuss key vulnerabilities of the supply chain for critical materials from an Asian perspective; potential actions to address the vulnerabilities for key actors; and short- and mid-term strategies to implement the actions identified. This in-person event will be held in conjunction with the Asia Clean Energy Forum (ACEF) in Manila, Philippines. Participants will include government officials from across the region, experts in critical minerals and supply chain vulnerabilities, multilateral development banks, and others.
