Spotlight Session

CEO Talks on Emerging Areas

Organized by: Asian Development Bank (ADB)

Thursday, 6 June 2024

11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (GMT +8) | Multi-Function Hall 2

Energy trilemma revolves around harmonizing the often-opposing objectives of energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic affordability.

Governments, industries, and consumers collaborate to navigate this complex path, actively seeking innovative solutions and advance policy frameworks to address the energy trilemma and shape a sustainable, low-carbon future, all the while safeguarding their economies and energy systems. The increasing importance of developing and managing more diverse sources of clean and renewable energy while ensuring grid stability, affordability and reliability has necessitated the needs for greater coordination among regulators, policy makers, power utilities and private sector developers in exploring new emerging areas and innovative business models and solutions.

These innovations cannot be only just smart technologies or infrastructure but also advance eco-systems with policies and regulations that are developed, coordinated, and implemented to enhance the sector’s performance, sustainability, and transparency across the value chain in the energy sector. Clean energy solutions are inherently decentralized and capital intensive requiring innovative financial mechanisms to support wider participation across the value chain.

Objectives:

“CEO Talk” panel will amplify the voices of CEOs and policymakers from Asia and beyond on increasing role of emerging areas in achieving sustainable and clean energy targets. Panel members are expected to share their visions and experience in developing policies, regulations, financing strategies, and institutional capabilities to enhance the sector’s performance, sustainability, and transparency across the value chain in the energy sector. Attendees will hear vital insights into the trends, challenges, innovations, and opportunities shaping the energy agenda and increasing role of new technologies, management systems, regulation and emerging business models while simultaneously encouraging private sector participation and investments to increase much needed access to capital. From the big questions, such as the role of governments, SOEs, private sector and consumers in the sector development and energy transition, to practical challenges around energy affordability, resilience, and security, the “CEO Talk” will be vibrant and dynamic platform for discussions about relevancy of emerging areas and the future of the energy sector. The session aims at:

  • How will government, policy makers and SOEs develop a business model by turning the climate rhetoric into a business strategy?
  • How to leverage emerging areas and affordable finance for scale and commercialization of clean and sustainable energy in ADB DMCs?
