Thematic Track Session 2.1 (Regional Power Trade & Market Integration)
Regional Energy Planning and Grid Integration
Tuesday, 3 June 2025
2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. (GMT +8)
As energy systems become more complex and interconnected, countries across Asia and the Pacific are moving toward integrated planning approaches that align generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure. Regional cooperation and grid integration are essential to optimizing energy resources and improving system resilience, yet aligning planning processes, data sharing, and regulatory frameworks across borders remains a key challenge. This session will explore how integrated systems planning can support sustainable development and energy security, and the roles that digitization, public-private collaboration, and policy coordination play in driving this transition.
The session will highlight recent advances in regional energy planning, including methodologies for ASEAN-wide Integrated Resource and Resilience Planning (IRRP), and the implementation of a data sharing framework for ASEAN power utilities. Presenters will also explore energy system modeling for Central Asia and approaches that link national planning with long-term net-zero targets. Through these examples, participants will gain insights into how countries are aligning technical tools, institutional processes, and cross-border cooperation to create more resilient and inclusive energy systems.
