Muaviyath Mohamed
State Minister,
Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Maldives
Dr. Muaviyath Mohamed currently serves as the State Minister for Climate Change, Environment, and Energy. He obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, specializing in "Energy Constraint and Adaptability" with a particular focus on renewable energy applications tailored for small islands. Dr. Mohamed has authored several articles in this field, including "Energy Constraint and Adaptability: Focus on Renewable Energy on Small Islands" published by NERI (National Energy Research Institute), New Zealand, and "Solar and Wind Energy for Small Island Electrification: A Maldivian Case Study" published by UKERC (UK Energy Research Centre). He has also contributed to research on "Voluntary Demand Participation (VDP) for Security of Essential Energy Activities in Remote Communities with Case Study in Maldives" published in Energy for Sustainable Development by the International Energy Initiative.
In addition to his Ph.D., Dr. Mohamed holds a Master's degree in Marine Technology from The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and a BSc. Honours from the Islamic University of Technology (Dhaka, Bangladesh). He also completed his MBA in 2021.
With a wealth of experience in the education sector spanning over 20 years, Dr. Mohamed previously held the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor at The Maldives National University (MNU) from 2015 to 2019. In this role, he efficiently managed key departments such as Administration, Finance, Human Resources, and Project Planning/Development. Prior to his tenure as Deputy Vice Chancellor, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Technology at MNU.
