The session will cover various aspects of clean energy development and investment strategies. A speaker from Greenmap ASBL will describe the design of improved competitive procurement processes and well-structured guarantee schemes that allocate risks between the private and public sectors. A speaker from IISD will present research findings on the record-high global fossil fuel subsidies and the need to reallocate these funds to accelerate the energy transition in Asian economies. A speaker from the USAID Power Central Asia Program will describe the challenges faced by Central Asian countries in attracting private investment for the clean energy sector, and then present a case study of USAID support of renewable energy auctions in Kazakhstan, showing how the auctions have led to a reduction in wind energy prices to a record 2.6 US cents/kWh. And finally, a speaker from the Maldives will highlight the country’s achievements in achieving universal access to electricity for its dispersed island communities, with a focus on the government's approach to increasing renewable energy share and attracting private sector investments in the energy sector.
