U.S. Government Resources to Support Energy Sector Development

Background:

The United States Government offers project developers/owners and host country governments a suite of resources to support successful implementation of energy sector investments across Asia that expand access to sustainable energy, modernize infrastructure, and strengthen utilities. These include guidance on project planning; technical assistance related to implementation; assistance with public sector procurements; and debt financing and political risk insurance for investors, governments and developers.

The U.S. Government offers these resources under its Asia Enhancing Development and Growth through Energy (Asia EDGE) initiative, which promotes energy programs in South and Southeast Asia to: 1) strengthen the energy security of regional partners; 2) create open and transparent energy markets; 3) improve free, fair, and reciprocal energy trading relationships, and 4) expand access to affordable, reliable energy.

Objectives of the Session

  1. To provide participants with an understanding of the Asia EDGE tools, technical assistance and financial resources that the United States Government offers to project owners and developers for energy sector development.
  2. To inform government officials from ADB’s developing member countries about U.S. Government resources that can be used to advance their national energy policies and objectives. The webinar will highlight past and current activities as examples of these resources.

About the Organizers

The Asia Enhancing Development and Growth through Energy (Asia EDGE) is a United States Government-wide initiative to grow sustainable and secure energy markets throughout the Indo-Pacific Region. Asia EDGE seeks to strengthen energy security, increase energy diversification and trade, and expand energy access across the Indo-Pacific. Asia EDGE draws on the expertise and resources of the U.S. government, private sector, and international financial institutions.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Regional Development Mission for Asia (USAID/RDMA) leads USAID’s Asia EDGE efforts for Southeast Asia. USAID’s Asia EDGE support focuses on four primary areas: utility modernization; increased deployment of energy technologies; transparent, best-value procurement; and regional energy trade and integration. USAID/RDMA coordinates these programs through a central body, the Southeast Asia EDGE Hub (the Hub), to increase their effectiveness and cohesively address and measure their impact. The Hub supports USAID/RDMA by tracking, communicating and building the capacity of regional energy programs to align with the objectives of Asia EDGE.
