Powering South Asia's Clean Energy Future: Regional Cooperation and Integration in the Energy Sector
Wednesday, 4 June 2025
11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (GMT +8)
Regional Cooperation and Integration (RCI) in the energy sector has emerged as a critical driver for South Asia's transition to clean energy, fostering cross-border collaboration to enhance energy security, affordability, and sustainability. Over the past decade, initiatives such as India's power trade with Nepal and Bangladesh, Bhutan's hydropower exports, and the potential for grid connectivity with Sri Lanka have demonstrated the transformative potential of RCI. These efforts align with the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) Strategy 2030 and Energy Policy 2021, which prioritize climate resilience, universal energy access, and regional integration, while also creating opportunities for inclusive growth and private sector engagement.
The session brings together experts from ADB, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka to reflect on the successes and challenges of RCI in the region. Drawing from real-world examples like the India-Bhutan hydropower partnership and emerging cross-border power trade frameworks, speakers will share key lessons to inform future strategies. The session will explore how RCI can accelerate the adoption of clean energy technologies, address barriers such as policy harmonization and financing gaps, and promote inclusive development across South Asia's diverse energy landscape.
