Opening Plenary

Energy Security and Diversification in Asia and the Pacific

Tuesday, 9 June 2026 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (GMT+8) Auditorium Halls 1–4

Asia and Pacific countries are currently witnessing a period where a confluence of geopolitical, technological, and economic shocks is disrupting traditional energy stability. The region is experiencing a massive surge in electricity demand, driven by rapid economic development and urbanization along with the proliferation of power intensive end-use consumption in places like AI data centers. Changes in global trade routes have exposed vulnerabilities in traditional energy procurement and systems, requiring nations to navigate a landscape where energy is no longer just a commodity, but the fundamental backbone of national security and inclusive economic growth.

To shield future progress, countries in the region are turning towards strategies that are centered on energy diversification and regional integration. The development of robust cross-border energy corridors will allow the seamless sharing of power across national borders alongside necessary energy mix expansion. Diversification means going beyond the conventional transition and includes, among others, expanding electricity trade opportunities, linking national grids, examining transformative solutions such as advanced nuclear and possible Small Modular Reactors to improve reliability, and enhance baseload power. By expanding the energy mix to include a wider array of clean, innovative, and smart energy technologies, the region can shield itself from external shocks that too often challenge economic growth and inclusion.

In the Opening Plenary, keynote speakers highlighted the transformative role of innovative technologies that go beyond the conventional energy transition, redefining supply source anchors, interconnection, and the regional grid. Executive leadership insights focused on advanced energy storage systems, smart grids, and the integration of modular power supply systems that can react in real-time. Leaders emphasized that energy security is the prerequisite for development; and that without a secure, stable, and diversified power base, industrial and digital targets that progress inclusive economic growth for the region, cannot be realized. The conversation centered on practical, innovative technology driven plans that prioritize reliability and affordability to maintain the region’s competitive edge in a shifting global landscape.
