Marine Renewable Energy – Role of Offshore Wind in Catalyzing Sustainable Development

Friday, 6 June 2025

9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. (GMT +8)

Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) plays a pivotal role in sustainable economic development, leveraging the vast, untapped potential of the ocean. MRE technologies support the clean energy transition across various scales—ranging from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to archipelagic nations and countries with extensive marine boundaries.

Among these technologies, offshore wind is the most technically mature and commercially viable, amongst various other technologies such as floating solar, tidal, wave energy, and ocean thermal energy conversion. Offshore wind has the potential to catalyze large-scale sustainable energy development, delivering reliable, clean power at scale.

Recognizing this, ADB and GWEC are collaborating to accelerate offshore wind deployment in Asia and the Pacific. A joint regional offshore wind supply chain study is currently underway and will be launched at the GWEC Asia Pacific Offshore Wind Summit in September 2025.

This session will explore the critical role of MRE in advancing sustainable development, with a primary focus on offshore wind energy as the most mature and commercially viable technology. Panelists will discuss how offshore wind can accelerate the clean energy transition in Asia and the Pacific, unlocking new economic opportunities while ensuring energy security. The session will also highlight ongoing efforts by ADB and GWEC to support offshore wind development, including regional supply chain initiatives, investment strategies, and policy frameworks. Through expert insights and regional case studies, the session will provide a roadmap for scaling offshore wind and other marine renewables to meet ambitious climate and energy goals.

By bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and financiers, this session aims to provide a roadmap for unlocking the full potential of MRE, accelerating Asia and the Pacific’s journey toward a low-carbon, resilient energy future.
