Dr Christopher Vehe serves as the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification (MMERE) in the Solomon Islands. In this capacity, he plays a pivotal role in steering the nation's energy policies, with a particular emphasis on transitioning to renewable energy sources and enhancing rural electrification.
Dr Vehe has been instrumental in addressing the Solomon Islands' significant energy challenges, notably the country's heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels and some of the highest electricity costs globally. He has championed reforms aimed at diversifying the energy mix by investing in renewable sources such as solar, hydropower, and geothermal energy. A key initiative under his leadership is the Renewable Energy Roadmap, which sets ambitious targets: achieving 100% renewable energy for Honiara by 2030, and extending renewable energy access to 80% of the urban population and 40% of the rural population by 2025.
Dr Vehe actively represents the Solomon Islands in international forums to advocate for sustainable energy solutions. He led the national delegation to the 14th IRENA Assembly in Abu Dhabi in April 2024, focusing on collaborative efforts to meet renewable energy targets. Additionally, he participated in the Asia Clean Energy Forum (ACEF) in Manila in June 2023, where he highlighted the country's energy challenges and the government's commitment to reducing fossil fuel dependence.
