Deep Dive Workshop
Crossing Borders: Integrated Solutions for Net Zero-Carbon Development
Thursday, 5 June 2025
2:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (GMT +8)
This half-day event is to share the experiences, efforts and progress of promoting zero-carbon industrial parks and zones in PRC and other countries in the region.
Industrial parks, as fundamental units of society, consist of various functional units such as manufacturing, commerce, energy, construction, logistics, and transportation. In 2023, there are a total of 2,543 national and provincial-level industrial parks in PRC, accommodating 80% of industrial enterprises, accounting for 69% of the national total energy consumption and 31% of national GHG emissions. As the global economy shifts towards sustainability, the concept of net-zero carbon industrial parks has emerged as a pivotal strategy in promoting environmental responsibility while enhancing economic viability. With rising concerns about climate change, policymakers, industrial park developers, and manufacturing companies face both significant opportunities and challenges in decarbonizing carbon footprint of products to meet domestic (NDC) and international requirements (CBAM).
Net zero-carbon industrial parks build an ecosystem for renewable energy and energy efficiency integrating with industrial development and environmental and ecological sustainability, with key features of (a) decarbonized energy supply system comprising renewable energy generation and clean heating and cooling, energy storage and smart grid; (b) green factories/buildings, and green logistics; (c) zero waste adopting circular economy approach; (d) low-carbon manufacturing and industries; (e) CCUS and carbon sink; and (f) inclusive carbon emission management system covering industrial parks, enterprises, products. Net zero-carbon industrial parks are the ideal arena to leverage private sector investments ensuring sustainability of the low-carbon energy transition.
This workshop aims to (i) showcase the achievements of near-zero carbon industrial parks in the PRC and other countries; (ii) identify the challenges to develop international standardized zero-carbon industrial parks; and (iii) explore how ADB along with other development partners can support DMCs to overcome these challenges.
